Support After Divorce — Alimony In Maryland

Alimony (sometimes called spousal support) is a support payment made from one spouse to another after a divorce. If requested, there are a number of criteria that will be used to determine whether or not alimony is actually needed. These criteria are specific and should be addressed by an experienced divorce lawyer who understands alimony laws in Maryland.

At The Law Offices of Shipe & Bush, P.C., we have a team of divorce attorneys that has had success in working with clients facing all types of family law situations. We take a highly personalized approach to working with our clients and make sure that we take the time to listen to their questions and concerns.

Will I Get Alimony?

Alimony is not automatic in a divorce. In fact, in order for alimony to be awarded, it must be requested specifically when filing for the divorce. The courts will consider a number of different factors when deciding on the issue of alimony, some of which include:

  • How long did the marriage last?
  • What is the income of each party?
  • The need for alimony vs the other party’s ability to pay.
  • What is each party’s earning capacity?
  • What is the age and health condition of each party?

While alimony is usually meant to be a temporary support payment to lessen the immediate financial burden of separation and divorce, in some cases, permanent alimony can be awarded. When you work with our experienced team, we will help explain the different types of alimony, the factors considered in determining alimony, and the possibility of obtaining alimony in your particular case. We will also take the time to explain how alimony will affect other support obligations (such as child support).

Unpaid Support

If your ex-spouse has failed to pay previously ordered alimony, there are legal methods available to assist in the collection of the support due to you. We can take legal action on your behalf to ensure that you receive past due alimony payments.
